Redefining
The Culture

From a 72-hour birthday party to work with DJ Tira, the barber Durban calls the Mayor Yaka Mashu is shaping Gqom culture in real time.

Some people go to parties. Mgilane gets a title for his. Durban named him the Mayor Yaka Mashu, and the name stuck.

This isn’t a viral moment that will pass. It’s culture in motion, and Mgilane is steering it with a clipper in one hand and the city’s energy in the other.

72 hours, no sleep

For his birthday, Mgilane threw a three-day party at London on 75. Seventy-two hours of full-volume celebration, with no sleep and no silence. That was when his name left the WhatsApp statuses and went into the city’s memory.

A barber first

People first noticed him dancing while he cut hair, turning every haircut into a show. The dancing was only the first layer. Behind it is a man with a plan, a lot of charisma and real respect for the people and the place that raised him.

Back again, with Spotify

A year later he did it again: another three-day street takeover, this time with Spotify during the MOM DBN campaign. It was no longer just a party. It made him a face of the movement, and more than a local name.

The way he talks

His quotes travel as far as his parties, and they sound like Durban. Two of them:

“If the volume is on 100, there’s no need to talk — we get straight to the point.”

“In Durban, the week is the weekend and the weekend is December.”

Not a one-hit wonder

After that first wave, some people called it luck. A fluke. Mgilane kept going. He has worked with DJ Tira, one of Durban’s most respected musical exports, and played some of the biggest stages in the city, from Fact Durban Rocks to SoundLand and Amstel & Friends.

What he’s building

Mgilane is building a brand, a foundation and a legacy. He isn’t chasing trends. With every event, quote and co-sign he is leaving his mark on the timeline of Durban, Gqom and South African street culture.

He’s the Mayor of Mashu, and he isn’t going anywhere.
